The Case for Payton Tolle to win Rookie of the Year
Tolle does not just get outs, he makes hitters uncomfortable. At 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds with elite extension (reported around 7.4 feet, near the top of the league), his fastball plays harder than the radar gun already suggests. He has touched 99–100 mph and sits in the mid-to-upper 90s, mixing a four-seamer, sinker, and cutter that create different looks from a similar arm slot
The 23-year-old left-hander for the Boston Red Sox has been one of the most compelling stories in baseball this season. Drafted in the second round out of TCU in 2024, he rocketed through the minors in 2025, debuted late that year, and then claimed a full-time rotation spot in 2026.
Through late August/early September, his numbers read like this: 9-6, 3.15 ERA, 137 innings, 159 strikeouts, 1.08 WHIP across 24 starts. He has posted a FIP of 3.09 and generated solid WAR value of 2.6. Those are excellent figures for a pitcher still building up his workload in his first full big-league season.

Personally, out of the 4 candidates for the award, Payton probably has the lowest odds of winning it. However, Payton Tolle is not just a solid rookie starter. He is a force with the size, stuff, personality, and trajectory of a future ace. He has an attention grabbing personality. He's only 23 years old. Payton Tolle definitely has a bright future ahead of him.
