The Case for Munetaka Murakami

I believe the top candidates for the A.L. Rookie of the Year Award are:

Kevin McGonigle (SS, Tigers), Parker Messick (LHP, Guardians), Munetaka Murakami (1B, White Sox), and Payton Tolle (LHP, Red Sox). I will be making the case for all of these candidates. However, today I make the Case for Munetaka Murakami to win American League Rookie of the Year Award.

Yes, there are arguments against him. His batting average is not going to jump off the page, and there are other rookies who have been more consistent in certain areas. But Rookie of the Year should be about more than batting average.

Earlier this year, he was injured with a hamstring injury at the end of May. He ended up missing about 35 games. Hamstring injuries tend to linger, especially in the day-to-day grind of baseball. 

Imagine another month of hitting from Maurakami. Then ask yourself, would he be not just the A.L. home run leader, but the MLB leader? I imagine that month of hitting would have also boosted his slugging and OPS.

Power Impossible to Ignore

Through September 6th, Murakami has hit 30 home runs with 62 RBIs and 73 runs scored. He is also posting a .350 on-base percentage, slugging percentage around .478, and an .828 OPS.

Thirty home runs as a rookie is a big deal. People love the long ball. Murakami has demonstrated that he can change a game with one swing. None of the other A.L. ROY candidates have demonstrated power that quite like Munetaka. That type of power would be impossible to ignore.

Accolades:

Murakami ranks 6th in the A.L. in home runs this year and is tied for 12th for the Major’s. 

• 8th in A.L. with a .478 in Slugging percentage

• Ranks 6th in walks and 5th in intentional walks in the A.L.

• He’s 1st in At Bats per HR in the A.L. at 13

• 2026 All-Star appearance

Defensively, he ranks:

• 4th in the A.L. with a 7.87  Range Factor/Game as 1B 

• Ranks 4th in fielding % at 1B with a .996 %

However, he lacks in average only hitting about .211 and he strikes out a lot (161, 5th in the A.L.)
