The Case for Parker Messick to win Rookie of the Year
The Cleveland Guardians left-hander has pitched like a frontline ace rather than a first-year player. Through early September 2026, Messick sits at 11-9 with a 2.53 ERA across 167 innings, a WHIP around 1.04, and strikeout totals that exceed his innings pitched (173 K). He could top out at 200 strikeouts by the end of season.
His ERA ranks among the top handful of qualified starters in the majors, his bWAR is in the 5.4 range, and he was named an All-Star. That combination of volume, efficiency, and consistency is rare for any pitcher, let alone a rookie.

Frontline Ace Rather Than a First-year Player
He’s basically top 10 in every pitching category in the American League. He has logged quality starts at a high rate, rarely failed to work deep into games, and has limited damage with elite command and a fastball that ranks among the most valuable in baseball by advanced metrics.
Position players often hold an advantage in Rookie of the Year voting because of daily impact and counting stats that are easier for voters to see. Messick only pitches every five days, so the argument against him is built-in scarcity.
That logic undervalues what Messick has done. Starting pitching is harder to find and more impactful on a per-outing basis when executed at this level. A pitcher who throws 160+ high-quality innings with an ERA in the mid-2s while helping keep a contending team in the race is not a lesser contribution than solid everyday production from a position player.
Historical Rookie of the Year winners have included dominant pitchers for exactly this reason: the gap between an elite rookie starter and a replacement-level one is enormous.
