Who Wins the AFC South in 2026? The Bystander Sports Pick

The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off a division-winning season. The Houston Texans are trying to reclaim the AFC South after finishing 12-5 in 2025. The Indianapolis Colts are looking to bounce back after a promising start to last season disappeared down the stretch. And the Tennessee Titans are hoping their young roster takes a major step forward.

While Houston should be the team to beat in the AFC South, don't overlook the Indianapolis Colts. But if we're making a prediction before the season begins, this Bystander is picking the Houston Texans.

The Texans Have the Best Defense in the Division

If Houston is going to win the AFC South, defense is going to be the biggest reason why. The Texans had one of the NFL's best defenses. They also added veteran talent this offseason, including safety Reed Blankenship and edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

Then there's Will Anderson Jr. Anderson has quickly developed into one of the most dangerous pass rushers in football. Former Texans star J.J. Watt recently praised Houston's defense and said the team deserves to be considered a Super Bowl contender.

That defense gives Houston something every division winner needs: a reliable identity.

The Texans don't necessarily have to score 30 points every week. If their defense continues to create pressure, force turnovers and make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks, Houston should have a chance to win almost every game.

However, there are reasons  to pump the brakes on Houston. Such as whether C.J. Stroud can take the next step. Stroud has already shown that he can be a franchise quarterback. But Houston needs him to become more consistent, particularly when the games get bigger. The Texans finished 2025 with nine consecutive victories, but their season ended with a disappointing playoff loss to New England. A bounce-back season from Stroud could be the difference between Houston simply making the playoffs and Houston winning the division. The Texans don't need Stroud to be perfect. They need him to be steady. If Stroud protects the football and consistently makes the throws Houston needs, this team becomes extremely difficult to beat.

The offensive line remains a question mark, and the Texans recently lost wide receiver Jayden Higgins to a season-ending ACL injury. Higgins was expected to have a significant role in the offense after a promising rookie season. Houston has responded by adding veteran receivers, including Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard, while also acquiring Kayshon Boutte.

A Tight Race Between Houston and Jacksonville

Heading into the new season, the betting markets and projection models largely agree: this is a close race between the Texans and Jaguars, with the Colts as a viable third option and the Titans as longer shots.

The Jags went 13-4 last season and have legitimate reasons to believe they can repeat as AFC South champions. But at after week 10 last year, the Jaguars were 5-4. They played the Chargers, Cardinals, Titans (twice), Jets, Broncos, and the Colts twice. Daniel Jones tore his achilles in the first quarter of the first meeting between the two teams. 

Trevor Lawrence is coming off the best regular-season stretch of his career and finished fifth in MVP voting last season. That makes Jacksonville dangerous.

The problem is that repeating a 13-win season is difficult, and Jacksonville's 2026 schedule presents some challenges. The Jaguars also face a difficult stretch away from home early in the season.

Tennessee Titans are Still Building

Tennessee is the toughest team to pick in this division. There are certainly reasons to be optimistic, particularly with the development of quarterback Cam Ward and the direction of the franchise. But the Titans are still trying to put the pieces together. They're competing in a division with two teams that made the playoffs last season, plus Houston and Jacksonville have more established rosters.

That doesn't mean Tennessee can't surprise somebody. Personally, I need to see more before I believe they're ready to win the AFC South.

Don't Sleep on the Indianapolis Colts

Now here's where things get interesting. The Colts are my sleeper team in the AFC South. Indianapolis isn't the obvious pick. That's exactly why I like them.

The Colts were in the division race last season before things fell apart. Their quarterback situation became a major problem after Daniel Jones' season ended with an injury, and Indianapolis ultimately couldn't maintain its early momentum. But this year's team has the potential to be different.

Daniel Jones has been cleared to return and is expected to lead the quarterback room. More importantly, the Colts still have one of the AFC South's biggest weapons: Jonathan Taylor. If Taylor stays healthy, Indianapolis has a legitimate foundation for its offense. 

Another reason to watch Indianapolis is Alec Pierce. Pierce was coming off a strong 2025 season, when he recorded 47 receptions for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns. After offseason ankle surgery, Pierce was recently activated from the physically unable to perform list. If Pierce can stay healthy and become a consistent big-play threat, Indianapolis could have an offense capable of putting pressure on opposing defenses.

Indianapolis has plenty of talent on defense as well. Laiatu Latu, DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart give the Colts a strong group up front, while the secondary has received significant attention with additions such as Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward. If that defense stays healthy and plays to its potential, Indianapolis could become the kind of team nobody wants to face late in the season.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, this division could come down to the last game like last season. 

Houston has the defense to keep games close, a quarterback with plenty to prove, and enough offensive weapons to put points on the board. But like the old saying goes, Defense wins championships so, Houston it is to win the division.
