Detroit Lions vs. Buffalo Bills: Week 2 Preview, Odds and Prediction
This is a big Week 2 matchup. Thursday Night Football, and Two 1-0 teams with high-powered offenses meet in a prime-time showcase that also marks the regular-season debut of Buffalo’s new Highmark Stadium. Here's the preview of the Lions vs Bills with the odds and our prediction for the game:
The Bills opened with a 36-31 win over the Houston Texans, lighting up the scoreboard behind Josh Allen (334 passing yards, 2 TDs) and an efficient pass attack that averaged 11.5 yards per play. James Cook and the running game contributed, and the defense held just enough in a shootout.
The Lions survived an overtime thriller against the New Orleans Saints, 31-30. Jared Goff and the offense (including Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown) showed their usual firepower, but Detroit had to dig deep after building an early lead.
Both teams enter with strong offensive ceilings and questions on the defensive side after allowing 30+ points in Week 1. This is a rematch of a memorable 2024 shootout that Buffalo won 48-42. The Bills have dominated the recent series winning the last 5 times both teams have met.
The new stadium atmosphere and short week for both clubs (especially Detroit traveling) add extra layers. Expect tempo, big plays, and a raucous home crowd for Buffalo’s first regular season night in the new venue.
By the Numbers:
Lines have settled in a fairly consistent range across major books:
Spread: Bills -4.5
Moneyline: Bills roughly -210 to -225; Lions +175 to +190
Total: 54.5
Implied win probabilities sit around 67% for Buffalo as per Kalshi. The total reflects the expectation of another high-scoring affair after both teams combined for 67 points in Week 1 and previously combined for 90 in their last meeting.
The Bystander Pick:
The injury bug is still around in Detroit. Detroit also has some offensive-line concerns entering Thursday. Left guard Christian Mahogany and Blake Miller are both dealing with injuries. Another key concern for Detroit is the secondary: with safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch still both out, and DJ Reed limited so far in practice this week. The secondary got torched, letting Tyler Shough throw for over 400 yards in week one.
The Bills gave up 124 yards on 32 attempts on the ground last week. This week, it’s Jahmyr Gibbs running the rock. I expect Detroit’s running game to help control the tempo of the game. The Lions are too talented offensively to overlook, and I expect Goff and the Detroit offense to keep this game close throughout.
My biggest concern with taking Detroit outright is the combination of Allen and homefield advantage. Buffalo has too many ways to create explosive plays, and Allen's ability to extend plays with his legs gives the Bills an advantage late in the game.
The Lions will make it interesting, but I'm taking the Bills to win a high scoring Thursday night battle.
Final prediction: Bills 34, Lions 27
