NFL Season Week 1 Previews, Odds, and Picks

Bystander Sports. We don't play. We pick winners.

I'm taking a quick look at every matchup for the NFL season week 1, providing previews of each game, odds, and most importantly giving the Bystander Pick. These aren't just picks based on who is favored. I'm looking at the matchup, how each team can win, where I think one team has an advantage and what could ultimately decide the game. 

Week 1 is always a guessing game. We can study rosters, matchups and expectations all offseason, but nobody really knows what these teams will look like until the games start counting. 

The 2026 NFL season opened with a Super Bowl LX rematch and the league’s first regular-season game in Australia. On Wednesday, the defending champion Seattle Seahawks edged the New England Patriots 13-10. On Thursday in Melbourne, the San Francisco 49ers dominated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7.

I would have never expected the outcomes of either of these games. As The Bystander starts the season 0-2 for picks.

Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers

Chicago enters the season with expectations after making the playoffs and winning the NFC North last year. Carolina, meanwhile, gets the benefit of opening the season at home and will look to make this a difficult matchup from the beginning. The Panthers still have to prove it can hold up on defense for 4 quarters against a team with real playmakers. 

The Bears have an interesting offensive matchup because they have multiple ways to attack Carolina. If Chicago can establish its running game, it can force Carolina's defense to commit additional defenders near the line of scrimmage. That should create opportunities in the passing game.

Chicago's skilled position talent should be able to create enough big plays through the air to pull away in the second half, especially if Carolina's defense is still finding its identity this early in the year. 

Chicago 24, Carolina 14

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cincinnati Bengals

Two offenses capable of scoring quickly against defenses that both have questions to answer. This has "shootout" written all over it based on the total alone. Cincinnati has the type of passing offense that can score quickly, while Tampa Bay has enough offensive ability to make this a problem for the Bengals if Cincinnati's defense can't get stops. 

By the Numbers:

Spread: Bengals -3.5 | Moneyline: Bengals -205, Buccaneers +170 | O/U: 50.5 

The Bystander Pick: Bengals

Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ skilled position group (Chase and Higgins expected to be available) should outscore Baker Mayfield’s Bucs. Cincinnati’s home crowd and offensive firepower give them the slight edge in what should be an entertaining shootout. This should be one of the higher scoring games this week.

Cincinnati 30, Tampa Bay 24

New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions

Detroit's offensive line and physical run game should be the story here against a Saints team that's rebuilding. The high total suggests the oddsmakers expect the Lions to score in bunches even if New Orleans keeps things competitive for stretches.

Spread: Lions -6.5 | Moneyline: Lions -310, Saints +250 | O/U: 49.5 

The Bystander Pick: Lions

Detroit at Ford Field remains one of the tougher home environments. The Lions’ balanced offense and defensive depth should handle a Saints team dealing with transition issues. I'm leaning toward the over given how explosive Detroit's offense can be even against a stiffer defense. Detroit covers and wins outright by a solid margin.

Detroit 31, New Orleans 20

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans

This is essentially a coin-flip on the board, and it should be a genuine slugfest. Houston's pass rush against Buffalo's offensive line is the game inside the game. 

By the numbers: 

Spread: Bills -1.5 | Moneyline: BUF -120 / HOU +100 | O/U: 44.5 

The Bystander Pick: Bills

Houston's defense is good enough to create problems, so Buffalo can't simply assume Allen will throw the Bills to victory. The Bills need to establish some balance and prevent Houston from being able to rush the passer on every down. 

However, I trust Josh Allen to make the difference when the game gets tight. His ability to create points in the red zone give the Bills a slight edge in a game that projects to be close. I expect a one-score victory in a physical AFC showdown. 

Buffalo 21, Houston 20

Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts

Baltimore begins the season on the road against Indianapolis. The Ravens bring a physical style and an offense capable of putting pressure on a defense in multiple ways. 

By the numbers: 

Spread: Ravens -3.5 | Moneyline: BAL -180 / IND +150 | O/U: 47.5 

The Bystander Pick: Ravens

I expect Baltimore to establish the run early and force Indianapolis to bring additional defenders into the box. That should open opportunities for Jackson to make plays through the air, particularly when the Ravens create favorable matchups outside.

The other factor is the Ravens' defense. Indianapolis needs to be efficient offensively because I don't expect the Colts to consistently win long drives against Baltimore. If the Ravens can create third and long situations, their defense should have opportunities to pressure the quarterback and force Indianapolis into difficult throws.

Baltimore 27, Colts 17

Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville is one of the biggest favorites on Sunday's schedule, and for good reason. Jacksonville is a clear talent step above a Cleveland team that could struggle to consistently generate offense. 

Deshaun Watson is making his first start in a long time for Cleveland; rust and a strong Jaguars defense make this a mismatch. 

By the numbers:

Spread: Jaguars -8.5 | Moneyline: Jaguars -425, Browns +325 | O/U: 40.5 

The Bystander Pick: Jaguars 

Cleveland's best path to an upset is turning this into a defensive battle. If the Browns can keep Jacksonville around 20 points, create turnovers and make the Jaguars drive the entire length of the field, they have a chance. 

I just don’t think that happens. Jacksonville should be able to use its running game to stay ahead of the chains. That puts less pressure on the passing game and allows the Jaguars to control the clock. My expectation is Jacksonville will control both lines of scrimmage and cover comfortably.

Jacksonville 27, Cleveland 13 

Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers

This has the feel of a physical, lower scoring game. Pittsburgh gets the homefield advantage, while Atlanta will try to take advantage of its offensive talent. The relatively low total suggests this could come down to field position, turnovers and which team makes the critical third down conversions.

By the Numbers:

Spread: Steelers -3.5 | Moneyline: Steelers -185, Falcons +154 | O/U: 42.5 

The Bystander Pick: Steelers

Third string quarterback Cooper Rush starts for Atlanta as both (Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. are ruled out). The Steelers’ physical style and Aaron Rodgers’ experience in big spots give them the edge in a lower scoring, grind it out type of contest. I don't expect a shootout. I expect Pittsburgh's defense and homefield advantage to make the difference. 

Pittsburgh 21, Atlanta 16

New York Jets at Tennessee Titans

Tennessee’s defensive identity under Robert Saleh and homefield advantage edge a Jets team still sorting out its offensive identity. The low total suggests a game where every possession could matter.

Spread: Titans -1.5 | Moneyline: Titans -125, Jets +105 | O/U: 38.5 

The Bystander Pick: Titans

Homefield is worth a bit more than usual in a game this close on paper, and neither offense looks explosive enough right now to push this total much past the high 30s. 

I think both defenses will have opportunities to dictate the game. That makes early down efficiency important. If Tennessee can stay ahead of the chains, run the football effectively and avoid third and long situations, the Titans can keep their offense manageable. The homefield advantage also matters more in a game projected to be this close.

Tennessee 20, New York 17 

Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles is one of the biggest favorites on Sunday's schedule. Arizona has the opportunity to make the Chargers uncomfortable, but the Chargers have a significant overall talent advantage. 

By the Numbers:

Spread: Chargers -9.5 | Moneyline: Chargers -525, Cardinals +390 | O/U: 47.5 

The Bystander Pick: Chargers

Los Angeles is one of the biggest favorites on Sunday's schedule. The Chargers' defensive front should be able to pressure Arizona's quarterback consistently, and I don't see enough on Arizona's side to make this competitive into the fourth quarter. 

Los Angeles 30, Arizona 17

Miami Dolphins at Las Vegas Raiders

This game has one of the lower totals of the week, which suggests a game where field position and turnovers could be critical. Las Vegas has the homefield advantage, but Miami's speed makes this an intriguing matchup.

By the Numbers:

Spread: Raiders -3.5 | Moneyline: Raiders -185, Dolphins +154 | O/U: 40.5 

The Bystander Pick: Raiders

Miami has had a tendency to start seasons slow, and if the Raiders' defensive front can disrupt the Dolphins' rhythm passing game early, this could get away from Miami by the fourth quarter. 

I think Las Vegas at home with a slight edge in physicality and secondary play should handle Miami. The Dolphins’ speed is always dangerous, but the Raiders’ home environment and defensive front give them the better chance to control the game.

Las Vegas 20, Miami 13

Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings

This is another game where the betting market expects a close finish. It's an NFC North rivalry, and divisional games tend to be unpredictable regardless of what the records say. 

By the Numbers:

Spread: Vikings -1.5 | Moneyline: Vikings -125, Packers +105 | O/U: 46.5 

The Bystander Pick: Vikings

A classic NFC North battle. Minnesota’s homefield and slight edge in overall roster construction (plus any residual questions about Green Bay’s offensive line cohesion) tip a tight contest to the Vikings by a field goal or less.

Minnesota 24, Green Bay 21

Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles 

An NFC East rivalry opens the season with Washington visiting Philadelphia. The Eagles are also expected to be one of the NFC's stronger teams this year. However, division games can get physical quickly, but Philadelphia has the advantage of playing at home. In recent years however, Washington has given Philadelphia a lot of problems at home.

By the Numbers:

Spread: Eagles -4.5 | Moneyline: Eagles -225, Commanders +185 | O/U: 44.5 

The Bystander Pick: Eagles

Philadelphia’s offensive line, Jalen Hurts’ dual threat ability, and homefield advantage at the Linc make them the clear favorites. Washington is competitive but lacks the sustained firepower to keep pace for four quarters.

Philadelphia 21, Washington 17

Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants 

Sunday Night Football gives us one of the NFL's oldest rivalries. The Cowboys made a lot of upgrades to their defense in the offseason. The Giants have John Harbaugh as their new head coach. Dallas enters as a small road favorite, meaning oddsmakers expect a competitive game and I do too. 

By the Numbers:

Spread: Cowboys -2.5 | Moneyline: Cowboys -160, Giants +135 | O/U: 48.5 

The Bystander Pick: Cowboys

Dak Prescott and Dallas’s skill talent should be too much for the Giants at MetLife. Even in a rivalry game, the Cowboys’ offensive ceiling and experience give them the edge in what should be a competitive but ultimately a Dallas controlled game. 

Dallas 27, New York 20

Monday Night Football (8:15 p.m. ET)

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs

The marquee Monday Night Football matchup, made even bigger by Patrick Mahomes making his return from a torn ACL. Kansas City at Arrowhead in prime time is one of the toughest environments in football, and Denver's defense has been genuinely disruptive in recent seasons. 

By the Numbers:

Spread: Chiefs -2.5 | Moneyline: KC -150 / DEN +125 | O/U: 43.5 

The Bystander Pick: Broncos

I expect a close game. I believe the odddsmakers have Kansas City's homefield mystique in prime time and Andy Reid's track record in these spots tip it toward a Chiefs win. However, I think the rust from Mahomes shows. Coming from the ACL injury, I do not expect him to be as mobile. Sean Payton’s defense is too good and slows the Chiefs enough to squeeze out a win in Arrowhead.
