The 2026 NFL season kicks off in unusual fashion this week not on the traditional Thursday night, but on a Wednesday. On September 9th, the New England Patriots travel to Lumen Field to face the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in a rematch of Super Bowl LX, where Seattle beat New England 29-13 back in February. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC, with streaming on Peacock and NFL+.

Fun fact: It's the first Wednesday season-opener since 2012. The reason why the game was moved in 2012 was for former President Barack Obama’s Democratic National Convention speech. Traditionally the NFL has the reigning champs open the season on a Thursday at home after Labor Day.

Seattle won the February matchup 29-13 behind a stifling defense (six sacks, two interceptions including a pick-six) and a strong ground game from then-MVP Kenneth Walker III. Drake Maye hurt his shoulder in the AFC Championship game. That could have affected his play in the Super Bowl. Which could be the reason why Patriots were held scoreless into the fourth quarter.

This time the stakes are different. It’s Week 1, the banner-raising ceremony will be loud, and both teams have changed. Here are the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks preview, prediction, and odds for the game:

New England Patriots:

Drake Maye enters Year 3 after finishing second in MVP voting last season. The supporting cast got a major upgrade: A.J. Brown (acquired via trade) gives Maye a true No. 1 receiver, Romeo Doubs adds another proven weapon, and DeMario Douglas remains a slot threat.

Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson form a capable backfield. Josh McDaniels is back as offensive coordinator, and the offensive line has been fortified. The defense, already solid, added pieces and should be better prepared for the schematic tricks Mike Macdonald throws at them.

Seattle Seahawks:

Sam Darnold returns after a strong campaign, but the supporting cast around him is thinner. Kenneth Walker left in free agency; the backfield now leans on Jadarian Price, George Holani, and others, with Zach Charbonnet still on the PUP list.

The receiving corps is still dangerous with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, and Rashid Shaheed. The defense that dominated the Super Bowl remains the identity of the team, though some key contributors from last year’s unit have moved on.

Oddsmakers currently have Seattle as a roughly 3.5-point favorite at home with a total of 44.5 points. Still feels a touch high to me, even with the roster turnover on the Seahawks’ side and the Patriots’ clear upgrades on offense.

Betting markets have been fairly consistent in the days leading up to kickoff, with Seattle holding roughly a 65% implied win probability across sportsbooks and prediction markets alike.

The Bystander Pick: 

Seattle enters as the favorite for good reason: a now proven quarterback, a top-tier receiver, home-field advantage (the 12th man is real), and the belief that comes with a championship run. But the Patriots aren't the same team that lost sight of the AFC not long ago. Drake Maye's rapid ascent, combined with a defense that ranked among the NFL's stingiest units last season, makes this closer to a coin flip than the number suggests.

Ultimately, I think there were too many changes to Seattle’s defense from last year. Paired with the loss of Klint Kubiak as offensive coordinator will leave the Seahawks not clicking on all cylinders for week 1. 

I think the game won’t be decided until the fourth quarter. Expect to see a tight, physical opener that lives up to the primetime billing. Seattle's home crowd and offensive continuity will be tough but I think the Patriots come out on top.
